Planetary Grinding Machines for SCD tool making 
 
A PG planetary grinder can be used to produce flat facets and radii on natural or synthetic diamonds so as to make a single crystal diamond (SCD) tool.

Coborn Engineering offer a standard PG3 and the ultra-precision PG3B machines. The grinding wheel position can be changed so as to change the direction of grinding. The soft direction of the diamond can therefore be found.

PG3B - Ultra-precision Planetary Grinder

The PG3B is an ultra-precision machine with an air-bearing pivot and air-bearing spindle. With the necessary skill and know-how the PG3B can make low waviness tools down to 100 nanometres or better.

The pivot will oscillate automatically between limits set on the touch screen. For the important final radius lapping process the machine runs automatically. Also all the other eliminated. The pivot table rides on precision linear and is pulled into the wheel by a deadweight system. This ensures the lapping of the diamond is not forced.

PB3B200 – for large radii up to 200mm

This machine is as the PG3B but has the additional facility for moving the wheel head assembly backwards away from the pivot centre. This, plus a special fixture, allows the machine to make tools with radii up to 200mm.

The PG3 (shown below) performs the same functions as the PG3B but uses conventional precision bearing rather than air-bearings. 

The main controls for the wheel spindle are set on the front of the steel frame base. The pivot is moved by hand. The machine can be fitted with a projector or a camera.

The PG3B is fitted with a camera mounted above the tool with the image being shown on the touch screen. In this photograph you can see on the screen the reflection of the tool being ground in the highly polished wheel surface. The PG3 can also be fitted with a camera or a projector. 
CF13 - Coning & Indexing Fixture for SCD tool making 

The CF13 is a coning and indexing fixture which can be used on the PG3B and PG3 machines. 
The precision Coborn spindle can be indexed via a 12 or 16 position indexing plate. The spindle may also be continuously driven by the motor mounted below the spindle. The spindle sits in a precision V block so that it can be easily removed (for off-line examination and measurement of the tool) then replaced accurately
